Saturdays at the Cafe

Saturdays at the Café: January 5, 2019 #FriendRequest @laurajm8 #Freefall @jessbarryauthor @grandcentralpub @harperbooks

Saturdays at the Café is a weekly feature hosted by my friend Jonetta at Blue Mood Café to talk about and discuss the books that I’ve discovered during the past week, added to my shelf, and am excited to read! The titles could be books I saw on Netgalley, at a bookstore, at the library, or on friend’s blogs, goodreads, or bookstagram. I’m so excited to join in with Jonetta this week!

Friend Request

Laura Marshall’s novel Friend Request is an interesting pick for me at the café this week, because I just re-discovered it browsing at a bookshop in Oregon, and the moment I saw it I remembered reading Deanna’s review of it over a year ago. Deanna was the first book blogger I ever followed, long before I ever had a blog. She writes awesome reviews and I nearly always love her recommendations. I looked up her review as soon as I saw Friend Request in the shop, and as I thought it was just as glowing as I remembered. I immediately purchased the book and I can’t wait to read it! About the Book

Maria Weston wants to be friends. But Maria Weston is dead. Isn’t she?

1989. When Louise first notices the new girl who has mysteriously transferred late into their senior year, Maria seems to be everything the girls Louise hangs out with aren’t. Authentic. Funny. Brash. Within just a few days, Maria and Louise are on their way to becoming fast friends.

2016. Louise receives a heart-stopping email: Maria Weston wants to be friends on Facebook. Long-buried memories quickly rise to the surface: those first days of their budding friendship; cruel decisions made and dark secrets kept; the night that would change all their lives forever.

Louise has always known that if the truth ever came out, she could stand to lose everything. Her job. Her son. Her freedom. Maria’s sudden reappearance threatens it all, and forces Louise to reconnect with everyone she’d severed ties with to escape the past. But as she tries to piece together exactly what happened that night, Louise discovers there’s more to the story than she ever knew. To keep her secret, Louise must first uncover the whole truth, before what’s known to Maria–or whoever’s pretending to be her–is known to all.

Freefall

I discovered Freefall by Jessica Berry on my friend Jennifer’s blog this week! Jennifer’s review can be found on Tarheel Reader, and it definitely sold me on this book. Not only is the color of the cover rich and stunning, but the book itself sounds like a book I love. Jennifer really connected with the survival theme of this novel, and she sure knows my tastes. I’ll definitely be trying this one! Order your copy here!

About the Book

A propulsive debut novel with the intensity of Luckiest Girl Alive and Before the Fall, about a young woman determined to survive and a mother determined to find her.

When your life is a lie, the truth can kill you

When her fiancé’s private plane crashes in the Colorado Rockies, Allison Carpenter miraculously survives. But the fight for her life is just beginning. For years, Allison has been living with a terrible secret, a shocking truth that powerful men will kill to keep buried. If they know she’s alive, they will come for her. She must make it home.

In the small community of Owl Creek, Maine, Maggie Carpenter learns that her only child is presumed dead. But authorities have not recovered her body—giving Maggie a shred of hope. She, too, harbors a shameful secret: she hasn’t communicated with her daughter in two years, since a family tragedy drove Allison away. Maggie doesn’t know anything about her daughter’s life now—not even that she was engaged to wealthy pharmaceutical CEO Ben Gardner, or why she was on a private plane.

As Allison struggles across the treacherous mountain wilderness, Maggie embarks on a desperate search for answers. Immersing herself in Allison’s life, she discovers a sleek socialite hiding dark secrets. What was Allison running from—and can Maggie uncover the truth in time to save her?

Told from the perspectives of a mother and daughter separated by distance but united by an unbreakable bond, Freefall is a riveting debut novel about two tenacious women overcoming unimaginable obstacles to protect themselves and those they love.
