Book Review: The Tenant | Freida McFadden
This is a spoiler-free review of Freida McFadden’s latest thriller, The Tenant. If you are looking for a plot summary, spoilers, and to discuss the ending of The Tenant, head to the spoiler review!
I am way late posting this review. I actually read The Tenant around when it published in mid-May, but I was also graduating with my doctorate right then so book reviews weren’t on my radar. I’ll say this—The Tenant is the first Freida McFadden book that I actually wanted to do a quick re-read of when I went to review.
You may know I can be a bit critical of McFadden’s books (especially this one…) but I have to say that The Tenant was a pleasant surprise! What did I like about it and did it succumb to some of her usual pitfalls? Let’s chat about it!
What is The Tenant about?
Blake Porter is riding high, until he’s not. Fired abruptly from his job as a VP of marketing and unable to make the mortgage payments on the new brownstone that he shares with his fiancée, he’s desperate to make ends meet.
Enter Whitney. Beautiful, charming, down-to-earth, and looking for a room to rent. She’s exactly what Blake’s looking for. Or is she?
Because something isn’t quite right. The neighbors start treating Blake differently. The smell of decay permeates his home, no matter how hard he scrubs. Strange noises jar him awake in the middle of the night. And soon Blake fears someone knows his darkest secrets…
Danger lives right at home, and by the time Blake realizes it, it’ll be far too late. The trap is already set.
What did I think?
Have you ever thought back in one of your lowest moments to a time when you felt like everything was going your way and wondered, ‘How did this happen?’ Blake Porter is definitely there. He went from having the job, the home, and the romantic partner he wanted to a rapid unraveling of it all. It makes you think about how temporary that sense of security in life is, doesn’t it?
I think that after reading The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden and liking the chapters narrated by Tom and then this book narrated by Blake, I have realized that McFadden is a rare female author who is better at writing male characters than female characters. The problem she typically has is that her female characters are deeply unlikable (but not in a fun way) and in general many of her characters can feel like caricatures of people rather than people themselves. For some reason, this works better with male-narrated stories.
The reason it works is that the reader expects the women characters to be framed by a man as one-dimensional (no offense to my male readers, I’m sure you would never fall into this trap)—every woman is overly hot, overly sweet, or overly witty. But no woman can be more than one of those! If she’s sweet (as his girlfriend Krista is), then she’s beautiful but not sexy. She’s a Madonna. A goddess. But she isn’t a sexpot like our other leading female character, Whitney. Of course, Whitney can’t be sweet or smart or kind; if she’s that hot—she must be horrible. And she is! I think reading these women from the perspective of Blake, they work. The reader assumes that Blake is over-exaggerating some characteristics while disregarding others.
Was Blake a good narrator?
Blake is just the right amount of what I thought of as “unhinged simp” and that also worked for me for an unexplainable reason. I felt for Blake with what he was going through while also rolling my eyes at him sometimes. In McFadden’s world, no one is likable no matter how nice they are. And this provides a sense of comfort, even for this character-driven book lover. I know Freida’s books will be all about that plot and so I no longer expect to have a reaction to the characters above mild sympathy, eye-rolling, or flat-out detestation. To be honest, Blake might have been the most dimensional, likable character of any Freida book I’ve read so I want to give her credit there because I can get a reputation as a hater. I give credit where it is due, though, and here it is!
How were the two female leads?
I don’t want to go into too much detail (let’s keep it for the spoiler review), but I can say that Krista and Whitney are perfect foils for one another as far as the plot goes. As Whitney gets worse, Krista turns from supportive girlfriend to (understandable) skeptic. Whitney is a tenant, but she’s a challenging one. At the same time, there’s always the impression that Blake may be misinterpreting some of what happens. Is Whitney as malicious as he thinks she is? (Freida loves to describe glittering malice in the eyes and Whitney has this in spades, according to Blake) Sometimes Freida throws in an element that I find infuriating (hello, Tuna), and in this case that element could have been this goddamn goldfish that Krista and Blake share. This is apparently how they will test out being co-parents. Not a dog, not a cat, and not even a hamster—they do this with a goldfish. Ridiculous! But that goldfish pays off, if I’m honest. One of the most outrageous, climactic scenes in the book involves that goldfish and it is actually pretty funny and devious, if you think about it. I won’t say more here, but if you’ve read the book, you’ll get it!
How were the twists?
If Freida McFadden is good for anything, it’s a twist. She throws them in early, often, and haphazardly. It’s likely why some readers (like me) can find her books a bit shallow, while others absolutely adore them. We are all along for the ride when it comes to Freida’s books. We fasten our seatbelts, suspend any disbelief we brought with us, and take those twists like a champ. Usually, McFadden’s twists come so far out of left field that I can’t possibly fathom guessing them because they just don’t make much sense. That can sometimes be the reason that her twists feel cheap. There’s no manipulation, no cat-and-mouse with the reader. Not the case here! I was pretty confident about one of the main twists and that didn’t remotely detract from my enjoyment of it. In fact, I found the buildup waiting to see if I was right to be highly engaging! That twist also comes with plenty of others—large and small. I particularly liked that there were a lot of open questions raised by the big twist that took piecing together to fully make sense, and the search for answers was a good time.
Overall thoughts
If you haven’t enjoyed Freida McFadden in the past but tend to like other twisty, plot-driven thrillers, I say give this a try. This was leagues above her other books and genuinely a fun story that felt fresh. Will Damron narrates Blake in the audiobook and he’s one of my favorite male narrators for this genre. He delivers! As for the story overall—it has plenty of plot holes and cheap tricks, but I thought it worked in this case. They didn’t bother me, and this book honestly felt fun and unhinged in a great way. Perhaps it was the post-dissertation glow, but I don’t think so. The Tenant is the best of her books so far, in my opinion!
